Honoring Divine Mother

Navratri – Time to Celebrate and Honour Divine Mother

Navratri is the festival of ‘nine nights’ celebrated in the honor of Divine Mother.

INTRODUCING NAVRATRI TO ALL

Navratri (pronounced as ‘Nav Ra Tri’ or ‘Nuhv rah tree’) is a Sanskrit word where “nav” means nine and “ratri” means nights. The beautiful occasion of Navratri is celebrated to honour the energies of Divine Mother, who is an embodiment of the infinite power of the universe representing valour, righteousness, abundance, prosperity and wisdom. Honouring the glorious energies of Divine Mother would connect us to our own heart energies of love and compassion for self and others.

During these nine nights and ten days, different forms of the Universal Mother are worshipped. So what is the significance of honouring Divine Mother during the festival of Navatri? This period symbolises cleansing ourselves with gratitude and respect so that the demons within us fade away. The tenth day symbolises the slaying of these demons as we invite the energies of purity back into us. The tenth day is commonly referred to as “Vijayadashami” (pronounced ‘Vij-aya-dash-ami’) meaning victory on the tenth lunar day, also known as “Dussehra” (pronounced ‘Dash-ar-aha’) meaning victory over the ten-headed demon king on the tenth lunar day.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF DIVINE MOTHER IN DIFFERENT CULTURES

From ancient times, many different cultures and religious faiths have featured and upheld the energies of Divine Mother. From the form of the Irish Goddess Anu, the Greek Goddess Gaia, the Egyptian Goddesses Hathor and Isis, many more forms and names are associated with the Universal Mother.

Christians honour Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus as the Divine mother. The holy Mother of Jesus is a representation of love, selflessness, and spiritual purity.

The Hindus honour Divine Mother in her many energetic forms which have different names based upon their characteristics and energetic attributes. Where Divine Mother Durga represents Valor and Righteousness, Divine Mother Lakshmi represents Abundance and Prosperity, Divine Mother Saraswati represents Knowledge and Wisdom, Divine Mother Parvati represents Strength and Power.

Thus, the glorification of the Divine energies of the Supreme Mother connects you to the divinity of the energies of creation and nurturing in this universe.

ASTRONOMICAL INFLUENCES ON THE MIND, BODY & SPIRIT

The auspicious festivity of Navratri is celebrated twice a year – the beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn. These are two extremely oustanding periods of climatic and solar influences to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit. It is a sacred opportunity to express devotion and reverence to the divinity of Divine Mother. Each day is dedicated to worship the various supreme energetic forms of the universe’s higher power of Divine Mother. During this period, the cosmic energies are extremely powerful and heightened. It is a period when seekers of truth can uplift their vibrational frequency through gratitude, humbleness and sincerity.

The nine day celebrations of Navratri represents honouring the power of Divine Mother in her countless, powerful energetic forms, commemorating slaying our energetic demons like ego, ignorance, and desire which binds humans to illusions. Energetically, this is an immensely powerful period for those who seek to free themselves from the cycle of karma.

A Mother looks after her child, she nourishes and sustains its body with utmost love.  Hence, when we connect to the energies of Divine Mother, we receive the opportunity to harmonise our body with Mother Nature as well. Detoxing and cleansing the body during this time would open the pathway for us to connect us to our true energies.

During these nine days of Navratri, disciples practice fasting and follow a food and water schedule in order to cultivate an attitude of reverence and gratitude towards the Goddesses. To understand this practice better, we fast to allow our overly-worked organs to rest and rejuvenate themselves. Energetically, we empty out the rubbish emotions in our body to give way to the light of Divine Mother to enter us. By chanting and meditating, we also speed up the healing and balancing of our mind, body and spirit.

On the 9th day of the Navratri festivity, the sacred fast ends after we make prayers and offerings to the Divine Mother to thank Her for Her divinity.
