All of us have past situations in our lives that have had a great emotional impact on us. Usually this impact is negative and caused by painful events and memories such as those arising from child abuse, painful divorce of parents, bullying, conflict in the home growing up etc.
While we might have moved on from these situations, there is a tendency to hold on to the pain, in ways that we are completely unaware of. The “holding on” can manifest in many different ways for eg.
– Just the thought of the actual event may cause us to be extremely angry or sad, years or even decades later
– There might be inexplicable physical pain in the body which has no real medical reason or explanation
– An unexplainable fear such as the fear of heights, fear of water etc.
If you are suffering from any of the above, it means that there are unresolved issues in your past which you must address in order to move on. If you do not have the actual memory of the event, it could be because the mind has blocked the truly painful event by removing it from the conscious memory in order to protect itself. This does not mean that there has been no damage, or that it disappeared, it is still very much present and needs to be resolved.
