The Importance of Fasting

This week’s Divine Conversations with Guruji takes another look at Fasting and its benefits.

Why should we fast? What is the impact of fasting on our bodies?
According to Her Holiness Guruji Sri Sri Poonamji, fasting allows our organs to take a break from having to process the constant eating that we do. It allows the body time to detox and bring itseelf more in alignment.
At the lunar equinox in the spring and fall, fasting occurs. This is two-fold: physically it allows the body to shift gears for the new season, and it reminds us that our food comes from the Divine Mother. We celebrate this, Navratri, for nine days by eating one meal in the evening.
Energetically there are benefits to fasting. By giving our body a rest from processing food constantly, our organs can relax and begin vibrating at a higher frequency. This helps with a more accute focus and allows for a shift in importance – ego or others?
